According to a report by Bernama on December 2, Fami, Malaysian Minister of Communications and Digital, pointed out that the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the ministry will formulate a framework within one month to require all social media platform providers to submit to the Institutional registration to conduct regulatory work.

He said MCMC needs time to complete the relevant framework, including compiling external opinions and the results of the meeting's discussions with social media platforms. Fami also stated that the government does not plan to block or close any social media platforms including TikTok for the time being.

“If we look at the situation in Indonesia, they are not planning to ban or shut down TikTok, but to regulate it, and for TikTok Shop, they just don't want foreign products to be dumped in Indonesia. Although in Malaysia this belongs more to other sectors responsibilities, but once we get the information, we will discuss with some other departments to coordinate some operations," Fami said.

According to previous media reports, Fami said that the ministry will summon TikTok management to explain Indonesia's ban on TikTok e-commerce services, and soon formulate measures suitable for Malaysia; He then issued a media statement on Facebook, disclosing the results of the meeting with TikTok executives, he said that TikTok's compliance with Malaysian regulations is unsatisfactory and must be corrected immediately.

Some media reported that these actions in Malaysia were in response to consumers' concerns about product pricing competition and data privacy issues on TikTok Shop.

However, judging from Fami's latest statement, Malaysia seems to have no intention of banning TikTok, but the signal it sends is that it will strengthen the supervision of social media platforms.
