According to the tax officer of the Philippine Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), the BIR has a team dedicated to monitoring the situation of online sellers, and they regularly check whether these sellers are still active.
"We are checking online on Facebook, Shopee, Lazada and TikTok and if we see them we urge them to register," he said. At present, they are still monitoring online and have not yet issued a formal notification to the store.
The BIR urges online sellers to register their businesses with the bureau, which can be done manually by visiting the tax offices in their respective districts or through the NewBizReg online portal.
"We want online sellers to know that there is a department responsible for online monitoring and that they need to register their business with the BIR," said Tax Officer III Ace Madrianda.
Unregistered stores may be penalized for violations such as failure to register and failure to issue receipts.
"For violations, if more than 30% of the sales are not declared, it can be considered fraud. Even if you are an online seller, you should have a receipt, and if you don't have a receipt, you don't have the details of the item," Amad said.
