According to US media reports, the US Senate is planning to amend the TikTok divestment proposal recently passed by the House of Representatives.
Currently, there are several amendments for senators to consider. But with TikTok likely to challenge any new law in court, senators want to tweak the language of the divestiture bill to make it more difficult to overturn.
Some lawmakers have proposed that the time for ByteDance to divest TikTok's US business should be extended to deal with possible transaction challenges, or the scope of the bill should be expanded to address other social media issues.
For now, senators appear poised for a drawn-out debate, a prospect that disappoints backers of the divestiture bill who had hoped for swift consideration of the bill.
The Senate pause will buy time for TikTok and its opponents. Previously, it was reported that TikTok recently spent $2.1 million on television ads with a message to senators: "#KeepTikTok."
At the same time, TikTok also revealed that advertising spending will exceed the $2.1 million initially reported, with a significant portion of the funds going to national and local television advertising campaigns.
