Online shopping population increased by 11%: Shopee remains in the lead

According to the latest data released by Ipsos, Malaysia's e-commerce and non-cash payment economy is undergoing significant changes.

Data shows that in the past six months, about 50% of Malays have participated in online shopping activities, an increase from 39% in 2023. The categories of online shopping goods are mainly concentrated in fashion items, groceries, accessories and electronic devices.



In terms of e-commerce platform market share, although Shopee still occupies a leading position, its market share has dropped by 6% compared with the previous period, while TikTok Shop has achieved an 8% increase. Specifically, 72% of respondents said they had shopped on Shopee, and 43% of respondents chose to use TikTok Shop.

The popularity of non-cash payment methods is also steadily increasing. In the past three months, about 55% of Malays have used non-cash payment methods, an increase of 4 percentage points from 2023.



It is worth noting that the use of e-wallets has increased by 14%, and as many as 92% of e-wallet users have used them in the past three months. The frequency of daily use of e-wallets has also increased, especially among the 25-34 age group, with 51% of users using e-wallets every day; among the 45-74 age group, the proportion is 42%.
