According to Indonesian media Katadata.co.id, TikTok Shop, Tokopedia and Shopee temporarily charged merchants a 12% VAT rate for advertising services on January 1, 2025.
However, after the government announced that the 11% VAT rate would be maintained, the platforms promised to refund the sellers the 1% difference.
Aditia Grasio Nelwan, head of e-commerce communications for Tokopedia and TikTok, assured that sellers who overpaid VAT on January 1, 2025 would be refunded in the form of "income balance".
Aditia stressed that Tokopedia and ShopTokopedia will continue to work hard to comply with government regulations, but did not specify the time frame required for the refund. Feedback on social media shows that Tokopedia and Shopee have now resumed charging advertising fees at a rate of 11%.
The General Department of Taxation of the Ministry of Finance also confirmed that it will refund the taxes levied due to the 12% rate, especially for non-luxury transactions.
