The bill requires ByteDance to divest control of its short-video app TikTok or face TikTok being banned in the United States. Under U.S. rules, the bill still needs to be passed by the U.S. Senate before being sent to President Joe Biden for approval.
In response to the results of the vote, TikTok issued a statement saying that the process of the legislation was secret and that there was only one reason why the bill was blocked from passing: it would ban TikTok in the United States.
"We hope the Senate will consider the facts, listen to their constituents, and recognize the impact this bill will have on the economy, the 7 million small businesses, and the 170 million Americans who use TikTok."
