TikTok CEO Zhou Shouzi Meets With EU Officials To Address Misinformation

According to reports, TikTok CEO Zhou Shouzi met with EU industry chief Thierry Breton, EU digital chief Vera Jourova and EU antitrust chief Didier Reynders in Brussels. This is Zhou Shouzi's second trip to Brussels, aiming to dispel the EU's concerns about false information on the TikTok platform.

It is understood that EU regulatory agencies have recently stepped up scrutiny of TikTok's role in the spread of false information. In this regard, TikTok stated that Zhou Shouzi will introduce TikTok's data security system, known as "Project Clover" (Project Clover), to the European Commissioners, which is a plan announced by TikTok in March this year to be implemented in Europe.

The plan proposes that TikTok will spend US$1.2 billion each year on measures to protect more than 150 million European users, and promises to store European TikTok user data locally, with the main purpose of strengthening the protection of European user data.

It is worth mentioning that TikTok announced in September this year that its first data center in Dublin, Ireland, is now operational and has begun migrating European user data to the center, while two other data centers in Norway and Ireland are also under construction.

The statement said that all European user data will be stored locally, and UK-based cybersecurity company NCC Group will oversee its data security measures, provide independent verification, and report any incidents. TikTok said only approved employees can access the system to control and operate it.

NCC Group, which is cooperating with TikTok this time, will serve as an independent security provider to conduct continuous security assessments of new security gateways built on TikTok's European user data, TikTok applications, TikTok data centers and other TikTok infrastructure.

At the same time, it will also serve as a managed security service provider for TikTok's security gateway, performing real-time monitoring to identify and respond to any suspicious or abnormal access attempts, and providing guarantees for the integrity of enhanced security control operations.
