It is reported that, Teten, Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, recently revealed news about how TikTok Shop will restart e-commerce business in the country.
According to Teten, TikTok has been in talks with five companies, including Tokopedia, Bukalapak and Blibli.
However, Reuters reported that a TikTok Indonesia spokesperson was unable to comment on the matter. Tokopedia, meanwhile, declined to comment, a representative for Bukalapak said it was unaware of the conversation, and Blibli did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
TikTok Shop officially shut down in early October. The closure is based on the Trade Minister's Regulation No. 31 of 2023, which prohibits social media from simultaneously becoming e-commerce platforms.
TikTok also appears to be taking various steps to be able to resume operations in Indonesia. According to reports, not long ago, CEO Zhou Shouzi wrote to President Joko Widodo expressing his hope for a meeting. Jokowi handed it to Teten and asked him to meet with Zhou.
Meanwhile, Reuters reports that Teten and Zhou will meet later this month. Teten also said he would demand commitments from TikTok regarding its business in Indonesia.
"I hope they are committed to having a sustainable business that does not compromise the products of domestic small and medium-sized enterprises," Teten said.
