Philippines Has Highest Shopping Fraud Rate In Asia

On November 23, local time, the Philippine Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC) stated that the Philippines has the highest shopping fraud rate in Asia.
According to the 2023 Asia Fraud Report, the country's shopping fraud rate has risen to 35.9%, the highest among the 11 Asian countries and regions surveyed. The report is based on data collected from nearly 20,000 respondents in the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center said that 24.8% of Filipino victims responded too quickly to scammers' demands, and 21.1% preferred to take risks.
Shopping scams were one of nine major fraud scenarios and techniques found in the Asian countries surveyed. Other scams include identity theft, investment fraud, government/bank fraud, job fraud, lottery fraud, family/relative fraud, bill payment fraud, and charity fraud.
Alexander Ramos, director of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center, urged the public to be careful when shopping online, especially during the Christmas period. He said: "We have observed that shopping scams typically increase during the Christmas period. Scammers take advantage of the high volume of online shopping and the vulnerability of the population during this period."
Authorities said victims of shopping and other cyber crimes can call 1326 to report them.
