From 1 January 2026, Lazada Malaysia will revise the payment fee charged on orders completed using Lazada PayLater. While the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) option remains a key driver for higher-value purchases, sellers should understand how the updated fee structure affects payouts, pricing, and return costs.

This guide explains the new PayLater fees, how they are calculated, and what the change means for Lazada sellers in Malaysia.

Lazada PayLater Fee Update Effective 1 January 2026

Starting 1 January 2026, Lazada Malaysia will revise the payment fee applied to all completed orders paid using Lazada PayLater. Under the new structure, sellers will be charged a 4.5% PayLater payment fee for each eligible order. This fee is subject to 8% Sales and Service Tax (SST), bringing the total effective PayLater fee to 4.86% (SST inclusive).

Previously, Lazada PayLater orders were charged a 3.5% fee (SST inclusive). From 2026 onwards, sellers should expect a higher deduction from payouts whenever buyers choose PayLater at checkout. This change directly affects seller margins, especially for higher-value items that are more likely to be purchased using instalment plans.

What Is Lazada PayLater and How It Works

Lazada PayLater is Lazada’s Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) payment option that allows buyers to make purchases using a revolving credit facility, usable exclusively on the Lazada platform.

To support this service, Lazada partners with third-party lenders such as Atome and Lazada Payfin. These partners are responsible for:

  • Providing the credit facility to buyers

  • Conducting buyer risk assessment and underwriting

  • Managing repayments and collections

This arrangement allows buyers to split larger purchases into manageable instalments, while sellers continue selling on Lazada without being involved in credit risk or repayment management.

How Lazada PayLater Fees Are Calculated

The Lazada PayLater payment fee is calculated based on the final amount paid by the buyer, excluding any Lazada vouchers. Once the order is completed, the PayLater fee (including SST) is automatically deducted from the seller’s payout.

Example Calculation

In this scenario:

  • Product price: RM1,000

  • Shipping paid by buyer: RM4.90

  • SST on shipping (6%): RM0.29

The buyer pays a total of RM1,005.19 at checkout.

Based on the new fee structure:

  • PayLater fee at 4.5%: RM45.23

  • SST on PayLater fee (8%): RM3.62

  • Total PayLater fee deducted from seller payout: RM48.85

This deduction happens automatically once the order is marked as completed.

Seller Payouts Are Not Affected by Buyer Instalments

When buyers choose Lazada PayLater, they may repay their purchase over a longer instalment period. However, this does not affect sellers’ payouts. Sellers continue to receive their sales profit in full once the order is completed, regardless of the instalment tenure selected by the buyer.

All matters related to buyer repayment, including late payments or defaults, are handled entirely by Atome and Lazada Payfin. Sellers are not exposed to credit risk and do not need to manage collections, ensuring that PayLater remains a buyer-facing payment option without operational impact on sellers’ cash flow.

Lazada PayLater Availability for Sellers and Products

Lazada PayLater is automatically enabled for eligible sellers following Lazada’s internal risk evaluation. Sellers do not need to manually activate this payment method, nor can they disable it.

The PayLater option applies across all products in a seller’s store and cannot be configured at the SKU level. Like other Lazada payment methods, PayLater is designed to improve buyer flexibility at checkout and support higher conversion rates, particularly for larger-ticket purchases.

Returns and PayLater Fees: What Sellers Should Be Aware Of

For orders completed using Lazada PayLater, PayLater fees are not reimbursed if the order is returned. This applies to all return scenarios, including items that are returned by buyers, lost during the return process, or damaged while being sent back.

As a result, sellers with higher return rates, especially those selling high-value or instalment-friendly products, should factor PayLater fees into their overall cost and pricing strategy to avoid unexpected margin erosion.

Tracking Lazada PayLater Costs More Clearly

With Lazada PayLater fees increasing to 4.86% (SST inclusive) from 1 January 2026, sellers will need better visibility into payout deductions, return-related losses, and overall margins, especially for higher-value products commonly purchased using instalments.

BigSeller supports this by giving sellers a clearer view of their operations across platforms.
