Discovery vs Conversion Orders: How Shopee Tracks Content-Driven Sales

Shopee has introduced a classification for content-related orders, labelling each one as either a Discovery order or a Conversion order. The change appears quietly in the Affiliate Portal, Seller Centre, and Shopee app rather than as a major announcement, but it carries real weight: this data now factors into the Influence Score required to reach L2 in Shopee's Creator Level programme.

This article explains what the two order types mean, how Shopee determines which label applies, where to find the data, and how sellers can respond to it operationally.

What Discovery and Conversion Orders Mean

The classification is based on the buyer's intent at the point they encountered a seller's content:

  • Discovery orders: The buyer had no prior intent to purchase the product. They encountered it through a livestream or video, and the content itself generated the purchase decision.

  • Conversion orders: The buyer already intended to purchase the product and encountered the seller's content while completing that decision. The content supported an existing intent rather than creating a new one.

Both order types count toward sales and commission in the same way. The classification does not alter earnings, it provides sellers with additional visibility into how their content is contributing to sales.

How Shopee Determines the Classification

The order type is assigned based on the entry point where the buyer first encountered the content.

Discovery entry points (buyers browsing without prior intent):

  • Homepage Discover Cards

  • Daily Discover Live or Video Cards

  • Live and Video Tab

Conversion entry points (buyers with existing purchase intent):

  • Search

  • PDP Floating Window

  • Shop Page

An order originating from a buyer who found a product while browsing the homepage would be classified as Discovery. An order from a buyer who searched for the product directly would be classified as Conversion.

Why the Distinction Matters

There are two practical reasons for sellers and affiliates to pay attention to this data.

First, it indicates whether content is generating new demand or simply supporting existing purchase decisions. A high proportion of Conversion orders suggests that content is effective at reassurance and closing but is not attracting buyers who weren't already searching for the product.

Second, and more directly relevant to Shopee's programme requirements: Influence Score is calculated as the proportion of content-related orders that originate from Discovery channels. Malaysian affiliates require an Influence Score of at least 20% to meet the quantitative requirement for L2. Sellers whose L2 progress has plateaued despite consistent sales volume may find that a low Discovery ratio is the limiting factor.

Where to Monitor Discovery and Conversion Data

Shopee makes this data available across several dashboards:

  • Affiliate Insights (Me > Shopee Affiliate > Your Performance): sales trend and Discovery contribution over time

  • Conversions tab (Me > Affiliate Program > Conversions): Order Type shown for each individual order

  • PC Livestream Dashboard: real-time Discovery/Conversion sales breakdown during a livestream

  • Seller Centre > Marketing Centre > Live & Video: Sales and Orders Data pop-ups with trend charts

  • App Realtime Livestream: mobile view of the live breakdown

  • App Post-livestream Insights: summary shown after each livestream concludes

  • App Live & Video Weekly Report: week-over-week comparison

The Conversions tab is the most useful starting point, as it shows the classification for each order individually rather than as an aggregate figure.

Increasing Discovery Orders

Sellers looking to raise their Discovery ratio should weigh their content strategy toward attracting attention from buyers who are not yet actively searching, rather than relying solely on reassurance for buyers already close to purchasing.

For livestreams:

  • Maintain a consistent, professional set-up that builds recognisability

  • Open with a strong hook rather than a standard greeting

  • Respond actively to viewer comments to sustain engagement

  • Demonstrate the product clearly and create a reason to purchase during the stream

For videos:

  • Front-load the hook, as the first few seconds determine whether a viewer continues watching

  • Use efficient editing and a clear script to maintain attention

  • Show the product in use rather than describing specifications

Managing the Operational Side with BigSeller

Shopee's Discovery and Conversion data explains where sales originate, but it does not address what happens once those orders arrive, particularly when a Discovery-driven livestream generates a sudden spike in demand for specific products. For sellers managing multiple stores or high order volumes, this is where fulfilment infrastructure becomes the limiting factor rather than content performance.

BigSeller, a free order and inventory management tool built for Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop sellers in Southeast Asia, addresses this gap:

  • Consolidates orders from multiple Shopee stores into a single interface

  • Synchronises stock levels automatically, reducing the risk of overselling when a specific SKU spikes in demand

  • Provides product-level sales reporting that can be cross-referenced with Discovery and Conversion trends to identify which products perform best in each channel

  • Supports batch order printing, packing, and shipping to handle volume increases following high-performing content

Shopee's classification identifies where growth in content-driven sales is coming from. Whether that growth translates into fulfilled orders and satisfied customers depends on the seller's operational capacity, which is the area BigSeller is designed to support.
