DTI announces e-commerce trust mark will become voluntary

Following strong opposition from e-commerce sellers, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will reportedly no longer require the use of the Philippine e-commerce trust mark, making it voluntary by the end of the year.

Senator Bam Aquino called the move "breathing space" for online small and medium-sized businesses, stating that the DTI's decision would reduce the compliance burden on small and medium-sized online merchants (MSMEs), giving them more time to adjust and prepare for future e-commerce regulations.

DTI Secretary Christina Roque also stated in a statement that the extension of the voluntary period is intended to listen to industry feedback and improve the system so that the "trust mark" can truly serve merchants and consumers.

The DTI is expected to evaluate whether the trust mark registration will remain voluntary by early 2026. While the requirement will remain voluntary until the end of the year, the DTI stated that "all existing laws related to e-commerce will continue to be strictly enforced."
